Strengthening the Democratic Environment and Raising Public Awareness on the Electoral System through a Journey to 12 Atolls

In a bid to strengthen the democratic environment of the Republic of Maldives and in relation to the upcoming Local Councils Election and the Women's Development Committee (WDC) Election scheduled for next year, awareness programs are set to be conducted in 36 islands across 12 atolls in the Maldives from November 28 of this current month to December 2 of next month.

 

The main objective of this program is to provide information to the public as a means of strengthening the democratic environment, including information on the functioning and principles of the Maldivian democratic system, the multi-party system, the rights afforded to citizens, the responsibilities that must be taken by the parties involved in the system, and raising public awareness of the electoral system. Additionally, it aims to raise public awareness for the Local Councils Election and the Women's Development Committee Election 2026.

 

The program is scheduled to take place in the following locations: Haa Alif (HA), Shaviyani (Sh), Noonu (N), Raa (R), Lhaviyani (Lh), Alif Dhaal (ADh), Faafu (F), Thaa (Th), Gaafu Alif (GA), Gaafu Dhaal (GDh), Addu Atoll, Addu City, and Fuvahmulah City. The program will include sessions to provide information to people of different age groups who have the right to vote, in addition to programs specially focused on youth. 24 facilitators, who will be involved in carrying out this program, have completed the Training of Trainers program conducted by this Commission.

 

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Islamic University of Maldives Learning Centre (Fuvahmulah City) are participating in this program conducted by the Commission to strengthen the democratic environment in the Maldives. Furthermore, Public Service Media will be active as the media partner for this activity.
