A high-level delegation from the Elections Commission of Maldives recently completed a knowledge-sharing and capacity-building visit to China, aimed at enhancing the commission’s electoral and administrative capabilities. The visit focused on strengthening institutional capacity and exploring innovative digital technologies to address misinformation and disinformation, challenges that increasingly affect institutional integrity.

 

The delegation’s objectives included to reinforce ECM’s institutional framework, to gain insights from China’s methods in political and civic engagement and promoting civic education. During the visit, the delegation explored approaches to strengthening institutional capacity development and different methods to expand the scope of campaign monitoring

 

 

The itinerary featured engagements with key governance institutions. The delegation met with the Vice President of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee and National Academy of Governance and took part in a seminar on citizen participation, political consensus, and digital transformation. They also held high-level discussions with the National People’s Congress, the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of Asian Affairs. The visit concluded at the Namofang Township Deputies’ Home, which offered practical insights into local administration.

 

The knowledge gained on civic education, political party regulation, and the use of digital tools in monitoring the false information to enhance institutional effectiveness will directly inform strategies to strengthen transparency, and the integrity of electoral processes in the Maldives. Furthermore, the visit reinforced the strong and enduring ties between the People’s Republic of China and the Maldives, demonstrating the value of international collaboration in advancing effective public administration and institutional development.
